Mirazur restaurant in Menton: an immersion day and a gastronomic experience in Provence

During my immersion stay with Virginie in Provence, some days are dedicated to practicing French while discovering iconic places in the region.

That Thursday, I wanted to surprise her… and invite her to lunch at Mirazur, a three-Michelin-star restaurant voted best restaurant in the world in 2019.

We drove to Menton as part of the immersion experience, which allowed us to practice French naturally along the way.

We left earlier than usual — around 8 a.m. instead of 9 — to make the most of the day. After a bit of traffic (and a small detour that almost took us to Italy 😄), we arrived late morning and started by visiting the Musée Jean Cocteau.

After visiting the Cocteau Museum, located in a former bastion, we headed to the Mirazur.

The restaurant sits above Menton, near the Italian border, offering breathtaking views over the Mediterranean Sea and the bay.

We arrived at an elegant building surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and were warmly welcomed.

The kitchens are located on the ground floor, including a large pastry kitchen with a sea view.

Our table was by the window, with a direct view over Menton.

Les cuisines se trouvent au rez-de-chaussée, notamment la grande cuisine de pâtisserie avec vue sur la mer.

A surprise menu… and a different way to remember the meal

At Mirazur, there is no menu to choose from.

We were not given a traditional menu, as the daily experience is a surprise.

That day, we enjoyed the “Leaf” menu, composed of nine dishes.

We started with a glass of champagne before the first course.

The servers arrived with four small bites that looked like cacti. The flavors were intense and varied. Each dish was carefully explained — we learned about its origin, ingredients, and sourcing.

At the end of the meal, the restaurant offered us something unique: not a classic menu, but a list of the plants, herbs, and leaves used throughout the meal.

We discovered ingredients such as elderflower, wild garlic, sorrel, fennel… and even surprising combinations like leaves paired with lamb.

It wasn’t a detailed menu, but rather an invitation to relive the sensations.

This left room for imagination — something I found beautiful, and that Virginie particularly appreciated.

Refined dishes and a living experience

The following dishes were beautifully presented and highlighted a wide variety of ingredients.

For me, the most memorable dish was a coriander cream with sea urchin eggs, served in a bowl shaped like a sea urchin.

But beyond the food, it was the entire experience that stood out.

We were introduced to certain ingredients, their origins were explained, and we were even invited to discover the garden.

The bread is made fresh daily: we tasted two types, one shaped like a crown, the other like a traditional loaf.

The butter is also homemade… and shaped right in front of us.

These details make the experience truly unique.

Desserts and surprises until the very end

The desserts were lighter.

One featured granitas on meringue with goat cheese ice cream.

The other combined ice cream with candied citrus fruits from the region.

The team also presented the fruits, including citron — an impressive citrus fruit, similar to a large orange with a very thick skin.

Once again, this is not just about eating — it’s about discovering, observing, understanding.

The experience was a complete surprise.

I would rank Mirazur among the five best three-star restaurants I’ve ever visited.

Virginie didn’t expect such a long meal — we stayed at the table until mid-afternoon before heading back.

As we left, we received one final gift: seeds to plant at home, as a continuation of the experience.

This day remains a very special memory for me, and I am deeply grateful to Virginie for sharing it.

This type of day can also be part of an immersion stay: practicing French in real-life situations while discovering exceptional places.
