Pétanque, a tradition from southern France

Pétanque is a traditional Provençal game that is extremely popular throughout France. This friendly sport is played with family and friends in village squares, during local festivals, and on warm summer evenings in Provence.

In French, people often say:

  • “jouer à la pétanque”

  • or simply “jouer aux boules”

Today, pétanque is both a popular leisure activity and a recognized sport practiced by thousands of enthusiasts in France and around the world.

The history of pétanque: a tradition born in Provence

Discovering pétanque in Provence

Pétanque was created at the beginning of the 20th century in La Ciotat, an emblematic village in the south of France.

According to tradition, Jules Hugues, nicknamed “Le Noir,” suffered from rheumatism and could no longer run before throwing his boules. He then began playing with his “feet planted,” meaning his feet remained still while throwing.

The word “pétanque” comes from Provençal:

  • “péd” = foot

  • “tanca” = planted

Pétanque literally means “feet planted.”

How to play pétanque

The principle of pétanque is simple: players must throw their boule as close as possible to the “cochonnet,” the small target ball.

Pétanque can be played:

  • one-on-one

  • in teams of two

  • in teams of three

It is an easy and accessible game for everyone, perfect for sharing friendly moments during a holiday in Provence.

  • on sandy ground

  • or simply in a Provençal village square.
